Cuala press card number 61 [c.1925-1940]. Printed by Elizabeth Corbet Yeats, illustrated by Jack Butler Yeats, with a poem, as Gaeilge, by Douglas Hyde (1860-1949) under the pseudonym ‘An Craoibhín Aoibhinn’. Hyde was a scholar of the Irish language and founded Conradh na Gaeilge in 1893 to encourage the preservation of Irish culture, its music, dance, and language. Hyde made a number of contributions to the Cuala press and it published the limited first edition of his influential book ‘Love songs of Connaught’ in 1904. Hyde penned several other books of collected Irish verses and folk-tales. By 1915 Hyde saw that the Irish language movement was becoming inseparable from republican political ambitions and he resigned from Conradh na Gaeilge to pursue his literary interests. He became the first professor of Modern Irish in University College Dublin in 1909 and held the chair until his retirement in 1932.
