Afghanistan: Hundreds of Women, Girls Jailed for ‘Moral Crimes’

Parwana, 19, was imprisoned for “running away” after fleeing a husband and mother-in-law who beat her. “If I knew about prison … I would have just jumped into the river and committed suicide,” she said.

Almost all of the #girls and half of the women behind bars in #Afghanistan were locked up for “moral crimes,” a new report by HRW says. These include zina, or sex outside of marriage, and “running away” – even if it is to escape a forced marriage or domestic #abuse.

Some #women we interviewed were convicted of zina after being #raped or forced into prostitution. The men who abused them remained free.
