The top photograph is known as "The Blue Marble" and was taken at a distance of 28,000 miles as the Apollo 17 crew approached the moon on December 7, 1972. (http://j.mp/Vs8FWf) The bottom image is a composite view of the Earth using Suomi NPP satellite imagery taken between April 18 and October 23, 2012 and was released on December 3, 2012.
