You will positively need a telephoto lens for close-up shots in the wild. I would recommend a 100-400mm zoom for a ‘basic bird’ lens. Use a 1.4x or 2x teleconverter to get tighter shots of a far-away bird, as it effectually increases the focal length of the lens by 1.4 times and 2 times, respectively. Use a flash with a flash extender to light subjects in the shade.
