Travel to #Cyprus ...NEVER EVER!! 'Little Billy', a stray puppy was thrown into a cardboard crushing machine on the orders of the manager of the 'Anastasia Beach Hotel' in Protaras, Cyprus.

Please attend the protest tomorrow, and/or sign the petition to express your support.

June 28, 2014 - A few days ago, a puppy, later named 'Little Billly', was deliberately caught and thrown into a commercial cardboard crushing machine on the orders of the manager of the 'Anastasia Beach Hotel' in Protaras, Cyprus.

The piercing screams of this helpless doggy were heard by horrified tourists as the heavy mechanisms crushed his little neglected body!

He was clearly a stray and had been wandering around the hotel for some days (at least) but instead of calling animal welfare organisations or even the dog pound, or alerting the municipality, as a responsible person would do, the manager of 'Anastasia Beach Hotel' had his staff chase the terrified animal for days, finally catching him and lifting him into the crusher.

On 25th of June, Little Billy was in a coma at a local vet clinic where the staff worked tirelessly to help him. The above picture was taken by a tourist who witnessed the incident and went to visit Little Billy, according to the blog 'Cyprus Expat'.

The petition posted on change.org collected 2,000 signatures in just two hours. The public relations department at the hotel's parent company were not answering calls and the hotel itself were not returning calls, despite repeated requests throughout the afternoon for clarifications.

Hundreds of comments calling for a boycott of the establishment had already been posted online.

A statement from the Animal Welfare Party said that its leader Kyriacos Kyriacou had visited the injured dog at a vet in Protaras and police were now involved in the case.

"The case is under investigation, they have also taken testimonies from the owner and the manager of the hotel and the citizen who gave the information to the Police," the statement read.

"The two perpetrators, a Cypriot and a Bulgarian, who were fired from hotel "Anastasia” are at large and the Police are still searching for them" the statement added.

Stella Stylianou from Argos Animal Welfare told the Famagusta Gazette that those responsible must be named and shamed.

"They should be named and shamed. It's already happening now. Why should their names be kept out of a newspaper? Because they are a hotel?", Stylianou said.

The Animal Party have described the incident as 'barbaric' and called for a 'change in mentality'.

The petition further states:

"This incident SHAMES CYPRUS and this hotel manager SHAMES his employers and does a great disservice to all the hard working hotel staff and management who are responsible people. The majority of hotel staff in Eastern Cyprus only have work for apprx 6 months of the year (in the summer season) most of them work very hard, they do not deserve a bad reputation. Also, there are a small number of hotels who actively help the animals and have responsibly addressed the animal related problems for e.g. by way of neutering campaigns and providing feeding stations etc they do not deserve to be tarnishes by the behavior of this savage.

The large majority of Cypriots are friendly, decent, hospitable people, they do not deserve this shame or the negative impact that this behavior has on tourism. The fact that this affects tourism is a very important factor, it is perhaps the only reason that certain bodies will even pay attention! So many tourists complain about the neglect and treatment of the animals in Cyprus. Cyprus must wake up and address this problem!"

Sadly, the stray animals situation is out of control in Cyprus, and while it is true that a small number of hotels help the stray animals, the majority of them "deal" with this issue by poisoning them, especially before the start of the tourist season so that tourist won't be "bothered" by their presence.

On 27th of June, Argos Animal Sanctuary reported that Billy was still in a coma but steady and it was not known how long he would remain in this condition but the vet said that - at least - his condition is stable.

Billy has a broken leg and a fracture on the spine which could have been caused as a result of the compaction or whether it was caused prior to being thrown in the compaction machine.

Cyprus' animal rights organizations are calling for a protest!

The 'Argos Animal Sanctuary' and A.F.C.C.P. will be marching in protest against this barbaric act of cruelty on Sunday, 29th of June, 2014.

The organisations are calling on the participants to meet at the 'Kama Hotel Pernera' at 17:00 and then march together to the 'Anastasia Beach Hotel'.

If you don't live in Cyprus and thus can't participate in the demonstration calling for justice for Little Billy, please express your support by signing the petition, at:
