yeah, this type of thing is horribly common. my sister just got married and kept her name, and many people didn't realize this and wrote out checks to her using her "new" (incorrect) last name. one bank would not allow her to cash a check written out this

lol oh dear. I've had similar stuff with my bank back home where they leave out my mom's half of my hyphenated name unless I explicitly tell them not to.
