This is in memory of my grandpa Joe, once an avid photographer. He passed away last night, leaving behind my grandma Nehi, their eight children (including my mom), fifteen (?) grandchildren and....wow, I don't even know how many great-grandchildren. When I was a kid, I thought this photograph of his was absolutely amazing.

As I was lighting the candles on my birthday cake today (all FORTY-THREE of them), Hugo commented that he and Esmé should have gotten me a real baby dragon as a gift, so that it could blow fire and light all the candles at once. Kids!

With a couple of months until the holidays, I am offering a new version of the thumbprint portraits as a gift idea.....sleek, clean and modern - and more affordable! Instead of the entire thumbprint shape, these new portraits will focus on the central identifying loop / whorl of the thumbprint and will be done in a square format on a 20" x 20" piece of 1/4" thick white plexi, which will float off the wall with the help of a couple of small strips of plexi affixed to the back. They will also be created using adhesive on the backs of the strips of text & image - no tape! Super clean, and will photograph beautifully, which means prints of the portraits can be easily created.

The deal: Portraits will be $500 each (plus shipping, if not local), AND will include one free high-quality color print you could frame and keep, or give as a gift. (Say you're doing one of your child - you could give the print to grandma & grandpa!).  Part of the proceeds from the sales of these portraits for the holidays will fund the purchase of materials for a couple of events I'll be hosting to make cards and gifts for girls who are survivors of sex trafficking at safe homes here in San Diego and elsewhere in the U.S.

Above you can see a mock-up.....I'll post photos as soon as I complete the first one in this new format. E-mail me at art.com if you have any questions!
(Thumbprint portraits are still also available in their original full form - framed or unframed - in two different sizes.  Please visit this page for the details:  http://www.cherylsorg.com/thumbprint_portraits.html)

'when they can't get out of the banana hole'....J.D. Salinger's 'A Perfect Day for Bananafish'. With thoughts in mind of all the suicides we've heard about recently - teen suicides, suicides resulting from bullying and homophobia, military suicides, I've made this piece using the sto...ry of the suicide of perhaps my favorite literary character ever, my literary 'crush' if you will, Seymour Glass. I know all too well the despair and utter sense of hopelessness that leads to this act and understand completely why it happens - you truly don't at all know or believe that it will ever be better, that you will ever feel anything but pain, that you matter, or that your death will affect anyone. It is so, so sad when someone reaches that point. Here is to the prevention of further senseless deaths, and even more importantly perhaps, to the eradication of hate and bigotry. xo Cheryl
