Members of McKinley Technology High School’s robotics team pose with Principal David Pinder after competing in the FIRST Robotics Competition at the Chesapeake Regional held March 9-10 at the Baltimore Convention Center. A robotics team from Phelps Architecture, Construction and Engineering High School also competed in the Chesapeake Regional. Out of 64 teams participating, Phelps finished 28th and McKinley 39th in the round-robin play. This was the first regional of the year for both teams and provided an excellent opportunity for the students to fine tune their machines and techniques prior to the DC Regional on March 30 and 31 at the DC Convention Center. Wilson and Anacostia high schools will travel to Richmond, Va., to compete in the Virginia Regional on March 16 and 17.

PIC OF THE DAY: Parents and children get an education in methods for keeping students academically engaged over vacation at a Chancellor's Forum: Passport to Summer Learning held 6/30/10 at Brent Elementary School in Southeast. The event featured booths from community partners including the DC Public Library, pictured here, FDIC, Destination DC, Everybody Wins!, Facing History and Ourselves, the UDC Science and Engineering Center, Junior Achievement, DC Parks and Recreation, DCPS Food Services Summer Meals, Shell Hydrogen Learning Center, National Geographic and the Smithsonian National Museum of American History. Madame Tussauds had a wax likeness of first lady Michelle Obama and National Building Museum brought a Lego town building from its new display. Children and parents received passports and got them stamped at each booth. If they filled up their passports they could get a healthy snack and a "Fun and Free in DC" guide.
